OpenAI is rolling out an animated GIF feature in ChatGPT, powered by its Images 2.6 model. Users can create a GIF from a written prompt or an uploaded photo, adjust the animation speed and edit individual frames. The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop and mobile apps, according to The Verge.

OpenAI demonstrated the feature with a prompt asking for a dancing cat. The resulting animation strings together small variations of the character in a flipbook-like sequence. Images 2.6 can maintain enough visual consistency to keep the character recognizable from one frame to the next.

The model is also intended to make image generation faster overall. OpenAI is releasing two API models for developers: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, designed for efficiency, and Sunburst, aimed at higher-quality generation. The two variants were first introduced with Image 2.5.

OpenAI says users now generate more than four billion images per week through ChatGPT and its API, one billion more than in September.
