Goldman Sachs has limited access to advanced AI coding tools, including Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, to engineers, according to Bloomberg, which cited internal guidelines issued in October. Traders and bankers had reportedly used the tools for months to monitor trading flows and create content, and the change has caused frustration within the firm.
The decision reverses a position publicly expressed in July by Goldman Sachs chief information officer Marco Argenti. At the time, Argenti praised “vibe coding” by non-technical employees, describing a process in which traders or asset-management staff could use AI to build quick prototypes before handing them to engineers for production development.
Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra attributed the change to “a variety of factors including productivity and risk management.” He said the firm’s experimentation phase had ended and that the tools were now being limited to employees “who are best suited to leverage them for the long term.”
