OpenAI has appointed Dan Driscoll as Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization, a newly created role focused on how advanced AI can support national security and cyber resilience. He will work with the company’s senior leaders and external partners, with particular attention to responsible use of the technology alongside U.S. allies.
Driscoll will collaborate with OpenAI teams and leaders across government, industry, academia, and allied institutions on practical modernization initiatives. He will also help the company understand the operational requirements of national security organizations around the world.
He previously served as the 26th Secretary of the United States Army, overseeing its operations, modernization, and resources. OpenAI says his experience spans military service, senior government leadership, law, and the private sector. As Army secretary, he oversaw resources for nearly one million Active, Guard, and Reserve Soldiers and more than 265,000 civilian employees, and worked on technology deployment, acquisition reform, and force development.
In his new position, Driscoll will advise public- and private-sector partners on policy and strategy for practical AI applications in national security. OpenAI says the appointment builds on its work with allies and partners to improve cyber resilience and protect essential services through its Daybreak program.
