OpenAI has announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, the company behind Code Storage and a collection of open-source tools for developers. The companies say Pierre’s team will help expand Codex’s tools for building, navigating and reviewing code, and adapt Git workflows for teams working with coding agents.

Some of Pierre’s libraries are already used in the Codex app. Trees helps users navigate project files, while Diffs displays code changes. Pierre has also developed an edit mode for making fixes directly within a diff, and Highlights, a syntax highlighter designed to update as developers type or agents generate code.

OpenAI said it wants to develop source-control tools for software projects involving both developers and agents. The company recently described Pando, its in-house source-control backend for engineers and agents, and said the Pierre team would contribute to its broader work on Git workflows.

Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source, and OpenAI said it will continue contributing to them. Code Storage customers can keep using the service after the acquisition closes while OpenAI works to bring its features into Codex.

The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until it closes, OpenAI and Pierre will continue operating as separate, independent companies.
